1.周云侠和新阿姆斯特丹艺术咨询公司
新阿姆斯特丹艺术咨询公司是了不起的汉斯(Hans van Dijk)的皮包公司,是SOHO(在家办公)的先驱。1996年我在那里第一次看到周云侠的作品，一张小油画，手提包里的小猪，那是一件礼物，他和汉斯是老朋友。
周云侠是“艳俗艺术”最初酝酿阶段的核心成员之一，在这个阶段的作品中，白菜、萝卜、猪肉等日常形象以广告图案式的拼贴组合，并配以标语文字。这些作品与“艳俗艺术”的典型作品的区别在于，俗是俗，不艳。比如徐伯公用丝绸做的大便都透着一股子艳劲，也缺少徐一晖作品的反讽和批判性。周云侠的作品更多的是对吃喝拉撒日常生活的认同，带有淳朴通俗的气息，骨子里是清新文气的，所以他没有被划入“艳俗艺术”的主要成员，并没有什么大错。
2．周云侠和龙爪树艺术文件仓库
第一次见到周云侠本人是在龙爪树的艺术文件仓库，1999年左右，当时周云侠在做挺特别的一件事，在公共厕所画壁画，装饰了很多公共厕所。这事一般人干不出来，是周云侠那一时期的巅峰之作。事虽极端，却有周云侠艺术态度的一贯性：
(1). 对生命日常状态的关注。
(2). 对禁忌不犯怵。
(3). 艺术手法的不规范。
3．周云侠和现在的艺术文件仓库
2002年汉斯的离去，使对周云侠艺术的研究基本上成为过期文件。
周云侠开始使用一种奇特的材料——癞蛤蟆皮制作作品。癞蛤蟆是上海地区的一种美食，每天都有一筐筐的癞蛤蟆在菜市场里被扒皮出售，这使周云侠很受触动！这种新材料具有非常强的特征：抽象的点状图案，细菌繁殖式的组织排列方式，以及对来源于丑陋的生命体的联想……看上去既象一片片烂树叶，又象一片片难看的蝴蝶翅膀。以癞蛤蟆皮为材料，周云侠做出的第一件作品是用成百上千张癞蛤蟆皮缝制的一件女式晚礼服！接着是癞蛤蟆皮花瓶、癞蛤蟆皮册页，周云侠正在壮大、扩展他的癞蛤蟆皮的世界。
与此同时,他的绘画也发展出与之类似的特征，抽象的元素象细菌一样排列、繁衍、变异，就象被放大的微观生命世界。
ZHOU YUNXIA WITH
1. Zhou Yunxia with
Amsterdam Art Consultancy is a company by great Hans van Dijk, a fore runner of
Zhou Yunxia is one of the leading figures in the beginning of “kitsch art”. In this period he did collage of everyday objects like cabbages, radishes and meat in the patterns of advertisement with slogans. The works differ from “kitsch art” by its dull colors. Even Xu Bogong’s silk shit expires a sort of gorgeousness. He is also lack of the sarcasm and criticism of Xu Yihui’s work.. Zhou’s works tend to deal with the everyday life with normality and a bit of literati taste. This is the reason why he is not included in the maim members of “kitsch art”.
2. Zhou Yunxia with Longzhaoshu Contemporary Art Archives Warehouse
The first time I saw Zhou was around 1998, in Longzhaoshu Contemporary Art Archives Warehouse when he was doing a quite special thing, decorating numerous public toilets with wall paintings. This is something that others would never do. It is his top work in that period. It’s a bit too much but it’s his persistent attitude:
(1) Concern over the everyday state of life.
(2) Ignorance of all sorts of regulations.
(3) Non conformity to the standard.
3. Zhou Yunxia with the present Art Archives Warehouse
Since the death of Hans, the study of Zhou’s art has become out of date archives.
He has started to use a very strange material -----toad skin for his work. Toads are a kind of delicious food. He is astonished by the large quantities of skinned toads being sold in the markets. This new material has a very strong character: patterns of abstract dots, the juxtapositions like germ breed and associations with this ugly creature…..looking like pieces of rotten leaves or pieces of ugly butterfly wings.The first work he made with thousands of toad skins is a woman wedding gown! Then toad skin vases and toad skin books, Zhou is expanding his toad skin world.
At the same time his painting are adopting similar characters. Like the germs, the abstract elements juxtapose, breed and change just as a blowup of microcosmic world.
